Unit 73: Availability and Legal Considerations

Level 3 Extended Diploma in Game Design
Unit 73: Availability and Legal Considerations

I will bet talking about three different set pieces of sound effects used in classic games. Few things need to be evocative as sound: the way the right score or effect can produce an emotional reaction is something film-makers have been capitalising on for decades, and more recently, video game developers too. Everybody who grew up with games will instantly recognise the opening bars of "Super Mario Bros" or the distinctive chime of "Sonic the Hedgehog" bagging a ring - but what is it that makes sound such a powerful asset in the developer's tool kit?

With games now telling more complex stories, we're seeing more cinematic aspects incorporated into their sound design. Here we take a look at some of the ways game designers have used sound and music to make games into the immerser and emotionally-charged experiences they are today. But most game still use the same old method of using sound to evoke; laughter, fear, anger and etc.

Music, FX and Legal Considerations

List of Music:

- Stains of Heresy (Darksiders 2): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HetplknU1pc
- This is what you are (Warframe): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iqdii8S9JTk
- Fight Club (Assassin's Creed 3): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oy-EP8B01tc
- Last of Us (The Last of Us): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cwDkutphzmU

Examples:
The three games will be using is "This what you are" by Keith Power, "Last of Us" by Gustavo Santaolalla and "Steins of Heresy" by Jesper Kyd:

"This what you are" has been made for warframe, when they had released new mission(s) called "Second Dream". This mission(s) was big deal to loyal players. As it would answer alot of question that has been lingering over the past year. The music; "This what you are", had made the showing and telling of the mission(s) a lot more dramatic and resolution feeling. Allowing the plot to move forward, an advancing the players to new skill tree after completion of mission(s), that would effect they're missions.

"Stains of Heresy" in Darksiders 2, it was used when player had learnt that characters had turned against them. "Stains of Heresy" had made this more intimidating boss fight, also doing well with the dialogue during the fight. This amped the tension of player with the boss' difficult movement to fight against.

"Last of Us" is was done by Gustavo Santaolla, this song had dramatic and dawning to its theme. When story was getting dramatic, the song would play making it more intriguing to watch as it reaching ending points of the sequence.

Legal considerations:
Copy right is a binding agreement or can be bought out right from current owner of the asset.
