Types of Game Genres

Types of Game Genres:

FPS:
FPS stands for “First Person Shooter”. When a game is about FPS, it most of the time from the view of the head. This can be seen in popular game, like; Skyrim and Call of Duty. The aim of these games is about getting most kills.

First exampleSkyrim‍’s main story revolves around the player character and their effort to defeat Alduin the World-Eater, a dragon who is prophesied to destroy the world. The game is set approximately two hundred years after the events of Oblivion and takes place in the fictional province of Skyrim. Over the course of the game, the player completes quests and develops the character by improving skills.

Second example; Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare. In 2054, Private Jack Mitchell of the United States Marine Corps, along with Private Will Irons and group leader Sergeant Cormack, participates in a battle against North Koreans in Seoul. During the counter-attack, Will is killed in action, while Mitchell's left arm is severed, forcing him to be discharged from military service. After attending Will's funeral service, Mitchell is offered a position with the Atlas Corporation, the world's most powerful private military contractor, by CEO Jonathan Irons, Will's father.

TPS:

TPS stands for “Third Person Shooter”. When a game is about TPS, it is mostly seen from behind the character you are playing. This can be used to show about the game itself. For example “Infamous: Second Sons”, and “Ghost Recon: Future Soldier”.

First exampleTom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Future Soldier opens in the year 2024 with a four-Man Ghost Recon team call-signed Predator, led by Joe Ramirez, deployed in Nicaragua to disrupt weapons trafficking in the region. Upon inspection of the convoy vehicles, a dirty bomb is remotely detonated, killing the team. Investigating the cause and tracking down the source of the bomb is tasked to another Ghost team call-signed Hunter, consisting of Ghost Leader Captain Cedric Ferguson, Staff Sergeant John Kozak, Master SergeantRobert "Pepper" Bonifacio, and Sergeant First Class Jimmy "30K" Ellison. The team ships out from Fort Bragg, North Carolina under the supervision of Major Scott Mitchell.

Second example; Second Son takes place in 2016, seven years after Infamous 2‍ 's Conduit protagonist Cole MacGrath sacrifices himself to cure humanity of a plague and destroy The Beast (the antagonist). Cole uses the powerful Ray Field Inhibitor weapon, which kills him and most of the other Conduits. The United States government establishes the D.U.P. to hunt down and capture the world's remaining Conduits, dubbing Conduits with the pejorative "Bio-Terrorists". The protagonist is Delsin Rowe, a graffiti artist and the local delinquent of the Akomish (Delsin’s clan) reservation. Delsin has the unique Conduit ability of Power Absorption, allowing him to use other Conduits' powers.

RPG:
RPG stands for “Role Playing Game”. This is seen in game when game is telling a player is playing as the character. This is mostly seen in Sci-fi and “fantasy game”. These types of games can tell a strong story to the player. For example; “Witch 3: Wild Hunt”. Additionally, Mass Effect 3.

First example; Mass Effect 3 details the adventures of Systems Alliance Commander Shepard (team’s leader) as they try to defeat a human-survivalist paramilitary group called Cerberus and a synthetic-organic race of machines known as the Reapers. The Reapers are immensely powerful and went to purge the galaxy of all advanced species every 50,000 year. Then cycle restarts.

Second example; The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt concludes the story of the witcher Geralt of Rivia, the series' protagonist, whose story to date has been covered in the previous versions. Continuing from The Witcher 2, the ones who sought to use Geralt are now gone. Geralt seeks to move on with his own life, embarking on a new and personal mission while the world order itself is coming to a change.

MMO:

The definition of MMO is “Massive Multiplayer Online”. This can be seen when MMO are mostly focused about playing with other players online. They usually try to promote team work, or just simply do PVP (Player Versus Player). For an example of an MMO like “World of Warcraft” and “WildStar”.

First example; World of Warcraft takes place in a fictional universe on the recently discovered planet of Nexus. The planet, once inhabited by a hyper-advanced race of aliens known as The Eldan who have all but disappeared, is fought over by two factions both hoping to control the concealed lost technology of Nexus; The Dominion, an intergalactic empire forged by the Eldan with the goal of controlling the galaxy, and The Exiles, a group of refugees and outlaws who have all been driven from their respective homelands by The Dominion and have joined forces to fight them.

Second example; Wildstar is set in a arid region of Durotar, Thrall's new Horde expanded its ranks, inviting the undead Forsaken to join orcs, tauren, and trolls. Meanwhile, dwarves, gnomes and the ancient night elves pledged their loyalties to a reinvigorated Alliance, guided by the human kingdom of Stormwind. After Stormwind's king, Varian Wrynn, mysteriously disappeared, Highlord Bolvar Fordragon served as Regent but his service was marred by the manipulations and mind control of the black dragon Onyxia, who ruled in disguise as a human noblewoman. As heroes investigated Onyxia's manipulations, ancient foes surfaced in lands throughout the world to menace Horde and Alliance alike.

Survival:
The definition of survival is staying alive long as possible. This is mostly used in horror games, as it tense, as players want to stay alive. It can also be used in games as they try to beat a high score, by not colliding with anything. For example; “Until Dawn” and “Race to the sun”.

First example; Until Dawn is designed to be played multiple times, as players cannot see all content with a single play through. Each play through will last about nine hours in length and the game mechanics utilize an in-game system called the "Butterfly Effect" in which any choice of action by the player may cause unforeseen consequences later on. For example, locating a weapon in an earlier chapter may allow the player to pick it up down the line when a chase scene leads back to the same room. Throughout the game, players will make difficult decisions during ethical or moral dilemmas, such as sacrificing one character to save another. The Butterfly Effect system blurs the line between right and wrong decisions and it is possible for players to keep all eight characters alive as well as having all eight of them die, allowing for many different paths and scenarios as well as offering several different endings for each character.

Second example; Race to the Sun does not have a plot nor a story, so instead it has a competitive single player mod. That is about beating a high score, without colliding with any objects. By doing this each time they complete a level, they enter a new one; which becomes harder.

Tactical Shooters:
Tactical Shooter are mostly used to think about action and win territory over. Or just trying to get through a certain obstacle. Usually, when games that are about tactical shooter, they want the players to be able to find best route of getting through the dilemma. For example; “Splinter Cell: Blacklist” and “Rainbow: Six Siege”.

First example; Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege is a first-person tactical shooter, in which players take control of an operator from the Rainbow team, a counter-terrorist unit. Different operators have different nationalities, perks, abilities and equipment. For instance, an operator named Twitch is equipped with a drone that can stun enemies with electric shock, while Smoke has the ability to detonate poison gases around, which can effectively lower the health of enemies in the affected areas. As a result, the game features an asymmetrical structure. Each side also gain access to a "Recruit", whose gears and gadgets can be customized by players to meet the requirement of a match. Players can only play as one of the classes in a match, and cannot be switched throughout. Powerful weapons, like grenades and breach charges are valuable, as their number are limited under the system. Team-work is encouraged in Siege, and players are tasked to integrate their abilities to eliminate their enemies. Communications between players are also encouraged.

Second example; Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Blacklist.Sam Fisher was just leaving Andersen Air Force Base, when a terrorist organization suddenly assaults the base, wounding Paladin Nine Security co-worker and best friend Victor Coste. Soon after, a faction called "The Engineers" takes responsibility, and announces a series of attacks on the United States called "The Blacklist", which will continue until the U.S. Government recalls all troops deployed abroad. Instead the U.S. they made a new agency; “Fourth Echelon”. They recruited Sam Fisher (as the agency), Issazc Briggs (Sam’s partner on the ground), Grim (as the leader of commination) and Charlie Cole (as engineer and technician). They operating base is a large cargo ship, that constantly on the move, making incredibly difficult to track. After meeting the group they were given an important mission “Blacklist” to hunt the engineer leaders and Majid Sadiq (as the boss of the engineers).

Stealth:
Stealth games are design to stay out of the enemies line of sight. This can be done in multitude ways of doing it. The majority of game is avoiding combat and hostiles. This can be seen in games like "Thief" and "Styx: The Master of Shadows".

First example; The story begins when Garrett is paired with his former apprentice, Erin, with both accepting the same job from their contact Basso. On their way there, Garrett steals Erin's claw without her noticing, because she usually uses it to kill guards when not necessary. They arrive at their job's location, Baron Northcrest's manor, and find a ritual taking place. Garrett gets a bad feeling and calls off the job, but Erin disagrees and she ends up falling into the center of the ritual, which was nearing its completion. Erin stops and floats in mid-air as she is surrounded by the ritual's energy. While trying to save Erin a part of the building falls on Garrett, knocking him out. After being unconscious for a year, Garrett awakens and learns that The City is being plagued by a disease of unknown origin known as "The Gloom" and that the Baron had put The City in lock down because of it. It Garrett job is to find out what is happening.

Second example; The story takes place long before the events shown in Of Orcs and Men. Styx, the first Goblin, wants to steal the heart of a World-Tree, enclosed inside the huge and terrifying Tower of Akenash. It is a kind of Bildungsroman that leads Styx to a better understanding of his own origins. The very first of all the Goblins, he’s a master in the arts of stealth, thievery, and murder. The depths of the miles-high Tower of Akenash, where Humans and Elves hide and protect the Tree, the source of the Amber, are the best chance Styx has of quickly amassing a small fortune and, perhaps, discover more about his true origins along the way.

Hack and Slash:
Hack and Slash games are based around characters that use they main weapon; as a sword. They're usually a combat system for the player to make combos. This can be seen in games like "Darksiders 2" and "Metal Gear: Rising Revengeance".

First example; Metal Gear: Rising Revengeance start in a providing security detail in an unnamed African country for its prime minister, N'Mani, Maverick operative Raiden and his team are attacked by Desperado, a rogue PMC involved in terrorism. While Raiden fends off Desperado forces, their leader "Sundowner" manages to kidnap and execute N'Mani. Sundowner's comrade, Samuel "Jetstream Sam" Rodriguez, fights and defeats Raiden, severely damaging his cyborg body. Raiden survives, and Doktor later gives him a new black cyborg armor that grants him much more power.

Second example; Darksiders II is parallel to the previous game (Darksiders). The Four Horsemen (War, Strife, Fury, and Death) are the last of the Nephilim, fusions of angels and demons who waged war on creation. To preserve the balance of the Universe, the Four Horsemen, tired of conquest, received incredible powers from the Charred Council in exchange for slaughtering the rest of the Nephilim. The Horseman Death, trapped the souls of his fallen brethren in an amulet, earning the title of Kinslayer.

Beat'em Up:
Beat'em up games are hand to hand combat styled games. Most "Beat'em Up" games require memorization of combos, and needing quick reaction. When playing game, they only moment notice to hit back or do a good combo. These can be seen in games like "Mortal Kombat" and "Takken".

First example; Takken does differently. As with many fighting games, players choose a character from a lineup and engage in hand-to-hand combat with an opponent. Traditional fighting games are usually played with buttons which correspond to the strength of the attack, such as strong punch or weak kick. Tekken, however, dedicates a button to each of the four limbs of the fighter. The gameplay system includes blocks, throws, escapes, and ground fighting.

Second example; The series takes place in a fictional universe consisting of eighteen surviving realms which, according to in-game backstories, were created by the Elder Gods. The Mortal Kombat: Deception manual described six of the realms as: "Earth realm, home to such legendary heroes as Liu Kang, Kung Lao, Sonya Blade, Johnny Cage, and Jax, and also under the protection of the Thunder God Raiden.

RPG:
RPG stands for Role Playing Games. When a player can choose  the decision for the character. Or just playing through the story, as the character. If the play doesn't is not given the chance to choose. They usually are able to design their characters instead. This can be seen in games like "Bloodborne" and "South Park: The Stick Of Truth".

First example; The game Bloodborne first few moments are seen in a first-person view through the eyes of a Hunter; the Hunter sees they're being operated on by an old man. The man explains that he is performing a blood transfusion, and tells the Hunter they've "come to the right place" in seeking Paleblood. He warns the Hunter that he will go on a strange journey that will seem like a bad dream. The Hunter then passes out after seeing several beastly creatures approach them. After the player has created their Hunter, the game is seen in the standard third-person view, and the Hunter awakes on an operating table in a small room. The Hunter then exits the room, discovers they're in Yharnam, more specifically Iosefka's Clinic, observes that the world is full of dangerous monsters and mysteries, and begins their lengthy journey.

Second example; The New Kid has moved with his parents to South Park to escape his forgotten past. He quickly allies with Butters, Princess Kenny and their leader Cartman. The New Kid is nicknamed "Douchebag"; he is introduced to the coveted Stick of Truth. Shortly thereafter, the elves attack Kupa Keep and take the Stick. With the help of Cartman's best warriors, Douchebag recovers the Stick from Jimmy. Cartman banishes Clyde from the group for failing to defend the Stick from the elves. That night, Douchebag and several town residents are abducted by aliens. Douchebag escapes his confinement with the help of Stan's father Randy and crashes the alien ship into the town's mall. This were the player has start to become familiar with his character, and build around him.

Positives and Negatives of Computer Gaming:

Positives of Computer Gaming:

- Problem solving and Awareness, this is can be seen in games like "Darksiders 1" and "Darksiders 2". As both require a quick thinking and and key awareness of the area, to solve a puzzle. This can be helpful skill in real world,as they a situations that have to be tackled quickly, before it has chance to rise.

- Multitasking  is used in real world, as life sometimes gets out of hand, and need to handle multitude of things.  Most games do this as to make it challenging to the player.

- Coordination and Teamwork, this can be seen in games like "Destiny" and Tom Clancy franchises. These games are revolve around teamwork, as it is needed to complete levels and challenges. This is great skill to have, as in real world. You going to have to work with other people, to tackle a bigger challenge.

Accuracy and Responsibility is used to help player to make quick decision, by analysing the situation. This is seen in "Until Dawn" as every decision is made, this would effect the overall game. This can be good way of making a vital decision in a short time of space, and taking the responsibility.

- Strategy and Anticipation. This can be a vital skill in life, as planning for multitude of situations, before it happens. This can be seen "Rainbow: Six Siege", as it require to tackle a situation and having pack up plans, just in case. Also, if plans does not work, they usually improvise, depending on the situation.

-  Taking Risks. Some games want players to take risks, and making a correct decision. This nice element to have in real world, thinking if the risk worth the reward.

Overall this would have positive impact on society. As newer and older generation sharpening they're wit and reflex. Making the individual more independent and stronger, while being able to work in things like teams, managing and coordinating.

Negatives of Computer Gaming:

- Health problems. If players spends all their free time playing video games, this could cause them to become unhealthy and unfit. This can lead towards obesity and sickness. Also could have chance of injuring themselves like repetitive stress injury.

- Relationships would suffer if player is constantly playing video game. this would make the player be withdrawn from family and friend. Some people would lie just to get extra time to play more. For example; http://www.theguardian.com/world/2010/mar/05/korean-girl-starved-online-game

- Poor Performance. This can be seen when player has work or school next day. They would be tired because they were spending too much time on the game. This would lower they're work performance and at school.

- Knowing the difference between Real world and Virtual world. This is only mostly seen in players who are addicted to video games, and being for longer periods of multiple times. This can effect to act in real world, as the virtual one. This has only been seen a few times. For example; http://www.nhs.uk/news/2011/09September/Pages/computer-games-distort-reality-claim.aspx

- Wasting too much Time.  Everyone has time to do they're own things, but if person wastes too much time. This can cause them too miss out good things in life, because they want to complete a level.

Overall, gaming can be a great benefit but mange in small dose. It can be huge advantage for the person. But some people can get addict to games, and this can cause them to be withdrawn from family and friends. Effect the body'e health and fitness, and could fall behind at school and may get fired at work. Also missing chance on doing real life activities like going on vacation, event and family gatherings.

My Concept Level Design:

This is my level design. Idea of game is that player as to complete a series of level, while being timed. But the level, itself will have traps (lasers and slow motion lasers) and traps (like spike pit). Goal of the game is to complete fast as possible, while trying not to die. These two factors will effect the overall score of your performance in the game.

Concept Story:

The concept of the story, is that a robot has his own self consciousness wants to escape the building. So he does not want to do forced labour. The robot has to traverse the level, while avoid hazardous traps and lasers.

There are two types lasers. Red laser can kill the robot forcing player to start again. While the greed laser can make robot slow and open for a few seconds. Also having spike pits that can be an instant death for the player. And lastly having a door that can only be open from the red button. which is usually some where else.

Faster the player completes it run through levels, with least amount of the deaths will have a higher score.
